RACE RECON
Kurt, & Kyle complete the Double, Double
by John "Dawg" Chapman  Email Dawg
Wow, Kyle, 128 in a 45. Various writers have weighed in on this; many of them calling on NASCAR, his sponsor, car manufacturer or the Coach to come down hard on him. I don't know about the others, but if I were Toyota, I doubt I'd be totally upset by this.
I might put out a PR about it. But, deep down you get the picture.

If you're expecting me to pile it on also, sorry, I'm going to have to get Biblical on this. You know, the "let him who is without sin, cast the first stone."  In the interest of full discloser I have to admit I'm currently in possession of an unpaid speeding ticket.  Not in the neighborhood of Kyle's this time.  Kyle's got me beat, but in my younger days. In my Porsche, I came pretty close.  I'm not proud of this, & only mention it to let you know why I can't get in line to pile on.  It wasn't smart then, it's not smart now.

Much has been made of Kyle's win totals, trying to equate his combined total to the King's. Personally I think that's apples to oranges.  But with this latest public misstep, He & Kurt HAVE set an interesting record.  With his run in with Mr. Unhappy, I think he & Kurt probably became the first brothers to have been popped by other drivers in separate incidents.  Bobby, & Donnie Allison may have both gotten tagged, in the famous '75 televised fight, but that was just one incident.

I suppose, if you get strictly technical, Kevin probably didn't connect, but I'm scoring on intent here, & the intention was crystal clear. There was absolutely no doubt about Jimmy Spencer having connected with Kurt.  According to Jack Roush, he broke Kurt's nose. Reportedly this was more of a slap.

If Jimmy had hit him with his fist, he might have moved that nose around to the side of his face.  I don't know about anyone else but, that little altercation was very gratifying for me.  Except for the part about Jimmy getting suspended, that is.

I expect now that if Kurt tries to wreck anyone. He probably won't get on the radio, & brag about it.  He did seem to have a problem, keeping his mouth shut.  Like getting on the radio, & telling his crew "I needed a caution, so I wrecked Robby Gordon."

Kurt ran afoul of the law at Phoenix in '05 when he was stopped for DUI.  As obnoxious as he reportedly was to the deputy sheriff, & the supervisor who was called to the scene, it's a wonder he wasn't charged. Some serious negotiations probably took place.
He was cited for careless, & reckless.

By this time, & as he was leaving anyway, Jack had had enough, & suspended Kurt for the final 2 races of the season.

He completed his part of the Double, Double With this high profile ticket.  It took Kurt 2 years to complete his half while Kyle got his done in 2 weeks. Now that's impressive!

I suspect if this had happened to Michael Shumacher, in Italy in a Ferrari prototype while he was with them.  This whole deal would have been settled by offering the Cop a ride.  I can see it now, the happy cop settles in, & says, "Now let's see what it'll really do."

Unfortunately, neither Toyota, nor apparently, Kyle are held in similar regard around Mooresville.

The Double Double is a well earned record you probably won't find in the NASCAR record book, so I just thought I'd call your attention to it.
