This Week's Idle Thoughts
by Jo Ann Hlavac  email me 02/26/08
This week we were at the California Speedway for the first test of the COT on a mid size track.  Whoops, I started this article and it was the California Speedway and BOOM they renamed it on me.  Make that the Auto Club Speedway of Southern California. I have a few idle thoughts I'd like to share.

So Robby Gordon gets screwed by NASCAR again...anybody reading this really surprised?

On this subject, the nose had the same number on it as the other Dodge noses that were approved so how would RG know the difference? Is this like what is in the rulebook and what's
not?  Sorta a mystery, right?

Good for Jim Beam backing Robby Gordon and so can you by going HERE and signing the petition.
Yeah I know NASCAR doesn't care about fans signing petitions but it made me feel better.

If I hear one more time about all the lead changes at Daytona last week I will scream.  Yeah how many happened while they were pitting under green thus simply one car handing the lead off to another in order to go and pit?  Just who do they think honestly believes this stat?

So, let’s see if I have this right.  They move the truck race to Saturday and have a double header with the Busch race and tickets cost between 40 and 50 bucks.  And the stands look even emptier, if that is possible.  As Ted Musgrave once said “they weren’t enough fans in the grandstands for a good fist fight.”

Now I am just not sure I understand the economics here.  California rates in the top 10% of this nation for gross income and North and South Carolina in the bottom 10%.  And they get 2 races for $40.00.  Anybody every remember getting that deal?  I remember a few years ago the truck race was rained out on Friday night at Darlington and run on Saturday...so being a smart girl who knew rain was coming I didn't buy a truck ticket on Friday thinking I would get 2 for 1 BUT guess what...they made EVERYONE leave the grandstands after the Busch race and have a ticket for the truck race to re enter!

So the new name of the track in Fontana is the Auto Club Speedway of Southern California.  What a Snappy new name.  Doesn’t change a thing though, does it?  I think they should just go ahead and name it Roush-a-fornia.

WOW...the one race that used to be pretty decent at California, the truck race, was a snoozer too.  And I can honestly say I have NEVER said that about a truck race.

I’ve been preaching this for awhile but say what you want about Kyle Busch...he can flat wheel a car OR truck.

Ok I will admit that the first time I heard DW say "Kyle Busch can go 3 wide all by himself" I thought it was pretty funny...BUT since I have now heard it about 40 times it is just plain getting on my nerves.

Oh yeah, they are blaming the empty grandstands on the Oscars...as a race fan if I had a choice between the Oscars and a good race, I would go see a good race.  Oh...I think I see what the problem is.

Was it just me or did ZZ Top look the exact same as 30 years ago?  I guess they aged quickly then stopped.

So the track's weeping...maybe it is just sad about the lack of racing. Or maybe it's Harold Brasington crying.  Or maybe the racin' gods are extracting revenge for NASCAR abandoning history and tradition.

And on the track's weeping problem....this started Friday.  Did they think it would just go away even though more rain was coming?

I do understand they wanted to get the race going (so they could get halfway) but when drivers complain about water on the track I do think they need to listen.

What the heck took so long for the officials to let Harvick know he wasn't in first but at the end of the line?

What was up with all the trash on the track Sunday?  I thought California was the land of tree huggers? The last time I saw so much trash on a track, Jeff Gordon won at Talladega.  So I guess it ain't a redneck thing after all.

WHO IS IN CHARGE OF WATCHING THE DOPPLER RADAR IN THE NASCAR HAULER?  I said before they even took the green flag there was no way they were getting this race in.  NASCAR oughta be ashamed of themselves for not calling this off sooner.  But I have seen this happen before.
NASCAR can't control the weather but they darn sure can control how they react to it.

On this subject, you just have to feel bad for the fans trying to sit out the rain.  As a fan who has sat thru more rain delays and rain outs than I can count let me tell you, it ain't no fun.  As a fan that has been to the California Speedway, I can tell you there is no camping outside the speedway within walking distance so these fans really had it tough.  At least with our rain delays, we can hang out at the RV and tailgate. Once again, shame on NASCAR

Did anyone actually believe John Darby when he said that they would not start the race with the thought to get it halfway.  They would start the race only if they thought it could go the distance.  YEAH right.  There was no other thought rattling around in their heads but the halfway mark.  There was no way an intelligent person who bothered to look at the Doppler could think otherwise.

Does anyone REALLY care what they call the "gopher cam"? I do like what Mark Martin said....he didn't care unless he ran over it then it would be stupid!

So even when a race is postponed until the next day, they still miss what brings out a caution and the restarts.  I wonder if the sales department was working overtime selling spots for Monday's race?

Only the second race of the year and we are already hearing "it is all about the clean air".

Only the second race of the year and we are
hearing "it's all about track position."

OK I will say that as far as races go at Fontana,
this one wasn't too bad.

Did it annoy anyone else that people kept saying
that Fontana was getting to be like Darlington?
WHAT?????  They are really trying to send me
over the edge.  LET ME MAKE THIS CLEAR.
NO MATTER WHAT THE TIRES DO FONTANA
WILL NEVER BE LIKE DARLINGTON!  In no
way, no shape or no form.  It is blasphemous
to even put California Speedway in the same
sentence with Darlington Raceway unless that
sentence is:
In line with our plan to "get back to the basics and honor history and tradition", the Labor Day weekend Race held at the Auto Club Speedway of Southern California will be moved back to where it belongs, Darlington Raceway.

THE READERS DIGEST VERSION OF THE RACE: One car dominates, gets a big lead. Track weeps.  Long red flag.  Track "fixed". One car dominates, gets a big lead.  Rain.  One car dominates, gets a big lead. RAIN.  RAIN.  RAIN. MORE RAIN. Race finally called until Monday.  No rain. One car dominates, gets a big lead. A different car dominates, gets a big lead.  Finally another car dominates, gets a big lead and wins.  Black flip.  On to Vegas.
