The Spirit of the Good Old Days Still Alive in Some
by Mad Mikie (Mike's Page) 05/03/08
by some.

Morgan hasn’t had much in the way of sponsorship and hasn’t had a very successful run in many a year. Until Talladega. Morgan finished 13th in the Busch race and was up as high as 7th during one point. So why the sudden change?

Like Rex giving parts and tires to help out less fortunate competitors, several folks have stepped forward to help Morgan out. Mr. Happy outright gave Morgan one of his cars, which was the one he used at Talladega, Matt Yocum and Tony Stewart have helped Morgan get tires for the upcoming Richmond race. Richard Childress donated a brand, spanking new motor to Morgan. Robby Gordon has donated parts to help Morgan out. This is the sort of thing that went on back in the good old days, folks helping other folks out.

On Tony Stewart’s XM radio show, Morgan talked about the help he was getting from these folks. At Talladega, Morgan had two sets of tires which he rotated for use during the race. When they pitted, they pulled the tires off, inspected them, and then put them back on during the next pit stop. Now if Morgan can pull off a 13th place finish with only two sets of tires, imagine what he could do if he had good tires for an entire race.

And you look at the drivers involved with helping Morgan out. Tony, Robby, and Mr. Happy aren’t exactly known for being the typical, PC clones who dominate the garage area. Tony’s a Hoosier and Robby and Mr. Happy are from California. Not exactly Southerners. And they’ve all had their moments when they’ve sounded off about what was on their minds and not followed the PC party line which infest the garage areas. And yes, they’ve all caused a few headaches and heartaches for fans of other drivers.

But I think it’s great that these folks are giving Morgan a helping hand. It could very well be that with this help, Morgan might return to his glory days when he was driving for the Wood Brothers and some other teams when it wasn’t unusual to
see him winning or finishing in the Top 10 on a
regular basis. But even if he doesn’t, just the
help that he’s getting from his fellow drivers
shows that the spirit of the good old days still
lives on in a few.

Folks in Basra were relieved a couple of weeks
back when they started receiving some
humanitarian aid in the form of food and medical
treatment from our troops in Iraq. Despite the
fighting that’s been going on there, our folks
have made sure that the residents are being
taken care of. Now if that’s not compassion,
I don’t know what is.

Most of you folks who have been regular readers know I’m a big fan of the good old days of NA$CAR. I’ve mentioned things before about how drivers and teams use to help each other out. Like Rex White giving parts and tires to fellow competitors, Tiny Lund lending a hand helping Rex work on his car, or Ned Jarrett and Fred Lorenzen working behind the scenes to help out Wendell Scott. That same spirit seems to be alive and well with a few of today’s drivers and a media personality.

For years folks have seen Morgan Shepherd go out and turn a few laps before heading to the garage. He’s been called a “start and park”
