Race fans arrive at the track as early as Thursday for a race that doesn't happen until Sunday. During this time they are getting "race ready". This includes eating, drinking and having fun. The ways they have fun vary by campsite. Laidback Racing calls the activities that the fans participate in to have fun prior to the race:
The Bubba Olympics
All real race fans have been to the Bubba Olympics. There are many events in this Special Olympics and it is held many places. The best Bubbba Olympics, in our opinion, are held at Charlotte on Memorial Day weekend. I think there are a few reasons why.
First, Monday is a holiday and no one has to take off from work to attend them.
Second, the race is Sunday night so participants have time on their hands to drink and play games.
Third, there are so many Bubbas there to participate.
Following are a list of events that we have seen:
Horseshoes (number 1 event)
Washers - like Horseshoes BUT you stand on a wooden platform & you throw big washers at the opposing team's wooden platform with holes cut out. The object is to get the washers in the holes instead of tossing them at a stake like in horseshoes.
Football, baseball, softball and Frisbee throwing
Chess (only saw this once in the Pocono infield BUT I had to add it)
Drunken tent staking
Drunken downhill bicycling
Drunken campsite hunting
Parking RV's in a muddy field
Now the normal person might not consider the 5 above catagories as events BUT if you've ever been to a NASCAR race you know that these 5 can be the most entertaining!
Now there are other events as well, these are the most popular.
There is also a beauty pageant held at Talladega. All the contestants are loaded into the back of pickup trucks and driven all through the campgrounds. We don't ever know who wins the beauty contest. I guess whichever woman doesn't fall out is crowned the winner.
