In the old days, if you weren’t driving your race car to the track but were towing it instead you were a lucky driver who was better off than most. Seems Ned Jarrett had finally made it to that point. Ned tells a story about going home after the race one night.
Two of his crew members were in the front & he was in the back trying to get some sleep because they had a long ride ahead of them & he was driving at another track the next night. The race car was on a tow bar and they were pulling it behind them.
As Ned was drifting off to sleep, he noticed a car coming up beside them. He thought to himself “that’s a nice looking car.”
As it got next to his window he realized it was his race car! It had come loose and passed them. It went off the road and crashed through a wooden fence coming to a stop in some farmer’s field. Well, Ned and the 2 guys were working furiously to get it out of there because they only had enough money for gas to get them to the next track. They didn’t have any extra money to pay for the farmer’s fence and needed to get out of there before he woke up and came down there with a shotgun!
