FROM THE OLE DAYS
DRIVING WITH NO HANDS!
The Chrysler Factory teams had fired Bobby Allison in the late summer of 1967. At that same time Fred Lorenzen was trying to get the Ford factory to back a car for him.
They agreed & Lorenzen hired Allison.
In the American 500 at the Rock it proved to be a match made in heaven.
Allison had a one lap lead on the entire field.
Lorenzen was concerned about Bobby overdriving the car
& held up a sign he wrote on the pit board:
SLOW DOWN.
Bobby did but obviously not enough to suit Lorenzen. Lorenzen was afraid the motor would let go. He scribbled another message on the pit board for Bobby:
SLOW DOWN SOME MORE.
Allison must have slowed down because when they waved the checkered flag for him he had both his hands off the steering wheel & clasped behind his head!
