FIRST QUALIFYING RUN OVER 200 MPH

Benny Parsons recorded the first qualifying lap faster than 200mph
when he won the pole for the 1982 Winston 500 at Talladega.
Parsons drove the Ranier Racing Pontiac to a lap of 200.176 mph.

(In March 1970 at Talladega, Buddy Baker, testing tires for Goodyear in Cotton Owens' Dodge, had become the first to break the 200 mph barrier.)

Parsons's luck didn't carry through the weekend. Darrell
Waltrip pulled a nifty slingshot move to pass Parsons for the lead on the final lap of the race and brought Terry Labonte with him.  Parsons finsihed third.
